Bettor’s Edge paced a horrific trip but still caught Panther Hanover at the wire to win the first three-year-old colt pace elimination in 1:49.4 at Woodbine on Saturday. Panther Hanover took the lead, with Warrawee Needy in second and Escape The News in third. Panther Hanover paced the quarter in :26.1.

No move was made by any in the field at the half in :54.3 (:28.2), then Bettor’s Edge came first over from fourth rolling into the far turn. Thinking Out Loud came second over and Hillbilly Hanover took the third-over spot.

Panther Hanover was holding onto command at three-quarters in 1:22.1 (:27.3). The field bundled heading down the stretch. Three lengths covered the octet entering the final eighth. Panther Hanover was all out to hold off as Bettor’s Edge dug in and Thinking Out Loud and Hillbilly Hanover surged down the center of the track.

Bettor’s Edge charged best late to get the lead and win by a narrow margin in 1:49.4. Panther Hanover finished second, Thinking Out Loud third, Hillbilly Hanover was fourth and Escape The News finished fifth.

Bettor’s Edge ($37.20) is by Bettor’s Delight, out of the mare Spring Wind by Life Sign. He is owned by Brittany Farms and Val D’or Farms, trained by Linda Toscano and David Miller guided the colt to victory.

“I brought him easy first over and he charged home. Usually by this time of year they got all their kinks out and with [Bettor’s Edge], there’s nothing I have to worry about,” driver David Miller said.
