August 21, 2009--Breeders Crown News: Hey Mister....Feelin' Lucky?
McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc once said, "Luck is a dividend of sweat. The more you sweat, the luckier you get." That may be true in the Burger Wars, but on Breeders Crown night at The Meadowlands luck and sweat don’t necessarily go hand-in-hand. With this week’s group of Open trotters and pacers, luck may have less to do with winning than good old fashioned sweat. To read the whole story CLICK HERE

Hambletonian Birthday Celebration at Cranbury Museum May 18, 2009--More than 60 people turned out to celebrate the 160th birthday of Hambletonian, the prolific foundation sire of all modern-day Standardbreds, at a party held in his honor at the Cranbury museum in Cranbury, NJ. The titular race created in his honor has grown to be one of the richest and oldest in the sport of harness racing. The 2009 edition of the Hambletonian is worth $1.7 million and will be raced on Saturday, August 8 at
the Meadowlands in East Rutherford,

The Cranbury museum is hosting an extensive exhibit of Hambletonian race memorabilia and the birthday celebration drew an array of admirers, including visitors from Sweden, past Hambletonian winners, and some locals bearing a real treasure - home movies of a car trip to the 1950 Hambletonian, raced at Goshen’s kite-shaped track and won by Del Miller and Lusty Song.

Handing out cake was Ben Webster, winner of the 1984 Hambletonian with Historic Freight; Mark Mullen, co-owner of 1987 Hambletonian champion Mack Lobell; and Jimmy Takter, who trained 1997 Hambletonian winner Malabar Man and Hambo elim winner Pampered Princess as well as a trio of Oaks winning fillies – Passionate Glide, Southwind Allaire and Gleam.

Mascot Hambo Tony and Joe Magno and his Standardbred Master [representing Bill Rysdyck and Hambletonian] also attended. The memorabilia exhibit is on display at the Cranbury Museum through Sunday, June 7. To see all the photos from this celebration CLICK HERE

New Jersey proudly claims an extensive equine history and many of standardbred racing’s archives and record books include the accomplishments of trotters and pacers bred, raced, owned or trained in the Garden State.

The founding sire of the breed, Hambletonian, born in 1849 and considered the father of all modern-day standardbreds was foaled and raised in New York but the Hambletonian race named in his honor has been held in New Jersey longer than any other host state – a record 28 years. The race, begun in 1926 to promote the breeding of trotters, was lured away from the corn fields of DuQuoin, Illinois, in 1981 by the sport’s newest and most prosperous metropolitan track, The Meadowlands of East Rutherford, NJ.

The exhibit, titled: The Hambletonian: Its Trotters, their Connections and the Racing Event 1926-2009 will be open Sundays from 1-4 p.m. through June. The exhibit features trophies, posters, memorabilia, ephemera and photographs from the 84 editions of the legendary race, including an award-winning video presentation created by The Meadowlands on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Hambletonian and narrated by Sports Illustrated’s Frank DeFord.

John Campbell, who drove Mack Lobell to victory, donated a set of his racing colors. Campbell won six Hambletonians, the most of any driver in history.

The 2009 Hambletonian which carries a purse of $1.7 million, is on Saturday, August 8, at The Meadowlands. The race will be broadcast live on NBC from 3:30-4:30 p.m. If You Go: Sundays through June, from 1-4p.m. Cranbury Museum, 4 Park Place East, Cranbury, NJ 08512 Call (609) 655-2611.
